Turbo Linux

A great new system.

New! Includes Netscape Navigator web browser and Netscape Communicator Internet suite!

Two kernels for the price of one!

Linux is a UNIX-clone operating system for personal computers. It provides advanced operating system features such as preemptive multi-tasking and protected memory. It's Internet-ready and all the software that you need to operate as a full-featured file server, print server, and Internet (web, ftp, email) server and development platform is included on this CDROM.

Linux for PowerMac has matured to a very solid system.

Now it's glibc-based and we've included both the new egcs compiler and GNU's stock gcc. The kernels and programs on this CD have been recompiled with the optimizing egcs for a significant performance increase.

TurboLinux for Power Macintosh is the combination of all the great Linux development work being done both by Apple Computer and by Linux developers on the Internet. Choose the Linux kernel that best fits your needs:

The MkLinux kernel development is overseen by Apple Computer, who determined that the best way to port Linux to PowerMacs would be to run it on the Mach microkernel. Apple is going to base its new operating systems on Mach so this is a bit of a glimpse into the future. The kernel even supports symmetric multiprocessing (SMP). MkLinux runs on most PowerMacs including pre-PCI machines.

The monolithic kernel for Power Macintosh is a lean-and-mean kernel tuned for the ultimate in performance. Its development is led by Paul Mackerras of Australian National University and sees participation from developers across the planet. It is closer to the bleeding edge of Linux development (based on Linux 2.1) and includes some additional features (e.g. floppy support). It runs on most PCI Macintoshes.

* Machines: Almost all Power Macintosh computers, including 61xx, 71xx, 81xx, 72xx, 75xx, 76xx, 82xx, 85xx, 95xx, most PPC clones, most G3 computers, many PowerBooks * Disk Space: 400 MB required (600 MB recommended) * RAM: 16 MB required (32 MB recommended) * SCSI: Hard Disk, CDROM, Jaz and (possibly) other removables * IDE: supports both hard disks and CDROM drives * Serial supported * Video: Motherboard video or video card including A/V and HPV card up to millions of colors; many third party PCI cards * X Window System: X11R6.3, 1, 8, and 24 bit pixel depth support, 3-button mice and trackballs conforming to Apple's ADB protocol, 1-button mice use keyboard to emulate 2nd and 3rd buttons. * Ethernet: onboard adapters and some PCI adapters * TCP/IP: Ethernet and PPP * Appletalk: EtherTalk via netatalk * SLIP/PPP: supported * NFS: supported * HFS: Native filesystem support is provided
